Green living community provides new sustainability paradigm
Illabunda is a unique residential housing project which brings ecologically sustainable living into urban Sydney. It is set on a 5 acre property in western Sydney on a uniquely positioned block of land with commanding views over Sydney. The owners of the land have a deep commitment to sustainability and this is reflected in the eco-design of a low density sustainable subdivision with a range of sustainable lifestyle features including:
- Community garden for organic food production, bee hives
- Native forest regeneration
- On-site energy production
- Rain water, grey water and stormwater harvesting and reuse
- Natural swimming pool (supplied by rain and stormwater)
The owners wanted engineers with a commitment to and an understanding of sustainable design, so they chose Storm, naturally.
Storm provided all the investigations and design in stages to get the project approved and constructed. This included designing roads and car parks, services and drainage, and water sensitive urban design features for water quality treatment. In addition, Storm designed the stormwater/rainwater/greywater treatment and reuse system which provides most of the water for the development’s needs.
